Help Us At The Shelter
We have many different volunteering opportunities, like the ones below.
Our lifesaving Transport Program is tremendously successful but takes a lot of work and we couldn’t do it without our volunteers. Help us load dogs for our large transports, drive them across the country to a new beginning, clean crates upon returning, clean the van, and learn to assist the staff in other ways to continue making this program successful in saving the lives of companion animals.
We also transport dogs on Wednesday evenings to meet P.E.T.S. LLC in Shreveport, LA. or Covington, LA. P.E.T.S. LLC transports our dogs to pre-approved homes in the Northeast. We typically meet them 1-2 times a month and are always in need of reliable drivers.
Hands On Care
We care for many, many cats and dogs at the shelter feeding, cleaning, exercising, washing dishes, giving medication, sweeping, hosing, bathing, brushing, and doing laundry. We also spend as much time as we can playing, socializing, and training. You can learn how to create enrichment items for our animals as well so these items are ready to go for our caretakers to pass out. It’s not all glamorous work but it’s necessary and it’s rewarding. If you can spare a few hours every week, either in the morning or late afternoon/evening, please consider this volunteer position.
We have one administrative assistant, and Bobby the office cat, that keeps us organized in many ways. She responds to emails and phone calls from members of our community needing help or advice, she helps to keep our finances in order, and does so much more! Do you need to build your resume and gain some experience with secretarial work? Then this volunteer position is perfect for you!
Veterinarian Prep Assistance
Are you looking to gain experience in the veterinarian field? We have a vet on staff that performs surgeries and exams three days a week with the assistance of her vet tech. There is always more to do than the week permits so if you want to gain experience here and build your resume just let us know!
We always need more photographers to help us get our adoptable animals posted in a timely manner. If you have experience taking photos/videos and are looking to use your skill with animals then please contact us.
Social Media & Website
We have a lot going on here and we love letting our community know all about it! Are you tech savvy, looking to volunteer and help animals but may not have time to come to the shelter? No problem, after a couple meetings with one of our team members you can help us from home with our social media pages and website.
Acadiana Animal Aid can save more lives with the compassionate assistance of temporary foster homes. While we work to find adopters, your help caring for and teaching our pets appropriate household manners is a key component of their success! Foster animals are available from a couple of weeks to a couple of months and matched to your home environment. Apply today.
Every year, Acadiana Animal Aid hosts fundraising and awareness events that are vital for our operation and community education. If you like helping with events or would just like to stuff some envelopes or help out the day-of, we’d love to have you. We will be attending more adoption events every month and can always use extra hands to transport animals and materials to these events. Come learn more about what we do and you can help us spread the word!
Love animals and kids? We have a Junior Volunteer Program that meets one Saturday a month and the more adults we have helping us with the animals and kids the better for everyone. Let us know if this is something you might be interested in.
To ensure the safety of our shelter staff and pets and to maximize our efficiency, we require that all “routine” volunteers train with an experienced handler for at least three shifts before being assigned to a regular schedule. Feel free to complete this training at your own pace, but please be willing to commit to six months of volunteering to help us utilize our resources most effectively.
